UK to host this year’s Reinventing Space conference
RISpace 2016 to take place at the Royal Society in October

Highlighting the trends that will define space enterprise a decade from now

The British Interplanetary Society is pleased to announce that it will again host the Reinventing Space conference and exhibition (RISpace) in the UK.

RISpace 2016 takes place at the Royal Society in London between Monday 24 and Thursday 27 October, bringing together industry, agency, government, financiers, academia and end users in the unparalleled environment of this major London scientific institution.

The focus of the 14th RISpace conference will be on how technology trends are leading to the increasing commercialisation of space, including low cost launch systems, mega-constellations, and a range of novel satellite applications, both in LEO and beyond.

Reinventing Space is coming to London at a pivotal time for the United Kingdom which has a strategy to grow its share to over 10% of the world space market by 2030 – a market that is forecast to be worth at least £400 billion by that year.

RISpace 2016 will hold sessions spread over the three main conference days of Tuesday 25 – Thursday 27 October. The sessions aim to cover all aspects of space commercialisation and development of this new frontier.

Visits to major space manufacturers in the south of England are being planned for Friday 28 October. All delegates are welcome to attend the Friday site visits at no extra cost.


Papers are invited for each of the proposed sessions:

Near Earth Activities: New services and commercial opportunities that are under development for our Near Earth Environment. From mega-constellations that will deliver global high-speed internet to on-orbit servicing and commercial debris removal missions, commercial expansion of our Near Earth Environment has great potential over the upcoming years.

Access to Space: New vehicles, technologies and operational concepts that are radically reducing the cost to reach orbit. Small launchers, reusability and commercial rideshare partnerships all promise to open up the space frontier and will be the focus of this session.

Enabling Technologies: Fundamental to a number of the new commercial opportunities are technology breakthroughs. Laser communications, cubesat propulsion, solar sails and on-board advanced data processing all promise to deliver or enhance the performance of the next generation of satellites.

Commercialisation and Applications: As important as the technology which is driving the development of space, are the new and innovative business plans which are being adopted by new and established space companies. This session invites papers from new start-ups, companies with a bold new commercial vision and those with new market predictions/forecasts.

Beyond Earth Orbit: This session will explore the plans to expand beyond Earth orbit, both for exploration and exploitation of new resources. Resources from the moon, Mars and Near Earth Asteroids all have great promise for the terrestrial economy and space propulsion, but what are the stepping stones to achieve this? Prospecting missions, commercial prizes, institutional partnerships, are all of interest.

The Call For Papers for the 14th Reinventing Space conference has now opened and closes on Friday 17 June.

ABOUT REINVENTING SPACE

2016 marks the 14th Reinventing Space Conference – the longest established international event in the field of space innovation. The annual conference has been taking place since 2002, at first dedicated to the responsive space sector and later expanding to embrace innovation in the low cost access to, and utilisation of space.


The 2014 event, also organised by the British Interplanetary Society, and coming to the UK for the first time, broke the conference record for the number of abstracts submitted.

The 2015 event went on to again break the record with 89 abstracts submitted. It also saw the largest number of presented papers in the history of the conference.
